Pate takes over at GFF

Former Nigerian health minister and incoming World Bank global director of health, nutrition and population Muhammad Ali Pate will also take over leadership of the Global Financing Facility (GFF) on July 1. He will replace Mariam Claeson, a Gates Foundation secondee who is stepping down after two and a half years at the helm.

World Health Assembly concludes 72nd session

The 72nd World Health Assembly (WHA), the World Health Organization’s main governing body, concluded May 28 in Geneva. Universal health coverage (UHC) was the overarching theme of this year’s WHA and is a core component of WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus’ platform. Member states passed several resolutions on key UHC priorities such as health financing, building sustainable and resilient people-centered health systems, and strengthening health workforces.


Inaugural WHO Partners Forum launches push for collaboration

The first WHO Partners Forum took place in Stockholm April 9–10, bringing together global health and development leaders from governments, health partnerships and civil society. WHO and its partners discussed how they can better support WHO’s mission to deliver care, services and protection for billions of people by 2023. Under WHO’s Thirteenth General Program of Work (GPW13), WHO needs $14.1 billion by 2023.

GPEI releases 2019–2023 Endgame Strategy

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) released this month an updated endgame roadmap document outlining its approach to polio eradication, integration, containment and certification. The GPEI Polio Endgame Strategy 2019–2023, developed in broad consultation with GPEI partners and stakeholders around the world, highlights issues including gender, research and development, and Post-Certification Strategy (PCS) implementation.
