Virtual WHA approves COVID-19 resolution

The COVID-19 pandemic informed the content and format of the 73rd World Health Assembly (WHA) May 18–19, as WHO’s decision-making body met via video conferencing technology for the first time and focused on the COVID-19 response and essential governance matters. The United States and China offered differing viewpoints, heads of state from a number of countries spoke to the virtual assembly, representatives elected a new executive board, and the assembly unanimously adopted the COVID-19 response resolution. The resolution called for: 1) an independent, comprehensive, stepwise review of the WHO-coordinated international response to the pandemic at the earliest appropriate time; 2) a scientific investigation into the zoonotic source of the virus; and 3) “transparent, equitable and timely access” to any treatments or vaccines.
